Rule Changes You Might See in 2016

  • Calendar iconSeptember 8, 2016

Most people believe that high school football in the state of Texas is a religion. Not so much here in Massachusetts, except for maybe our Thanksgiving Day tradition. But did you know that the State of Texas and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts share something that none of the other 48 states do? Our two states are the only two where high school football follows the NCAA college football rules. Everyone else uses something called the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS). So, when the NCAA makes rules changes, they filter down and our own MIAA decides to what extent those rules will apply to Massachusetts high schools. Following are some of the interesting development you may see this year.

Beat the Water Ban: There Will Be Plenty of Green Grass at Turco Field on Friday Night!

  • Calendar iconSeptember 16, 2016

The Rebels return to Turco Field tomorrow night, ready to begin the Bay State League campaign. Maybe it was the long bus ride (sitting for 2 hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic on Rt. 128 would cause anyone to lose focus) or early season jitters, but last week’s 27-0 lethargic loss to Marblehead was not what the Rebels were hoping for in the first contest of 2016. They don’t get much of a break this week with always-strong Needham Rockets coming to Walpole, but keep in mind this is a very young Rebel team, and they will quickly mature and begin to play with the confidence and reckless abandon we expect from the Blue and Orange.

So come on up to Turco Field at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016. Hey, you can’t water your lawn, so the turf at Turco may be your only chance to see green grass in Walpole! See you there!

Abra Cadabra

  • Calendar iconSeptember 8, 2016

What's more fun that the start of high school football season? Nothing, and we can't wait for the Rebels to open the season against the Marblehead Magicians at SSgt. Christopher Piper Field, on Friday, September 9, 2016.

Borrowing some lyrics from the old Steve Miller song, the Rebels Defense will be heard as they converge to sack the Magician quarterback time and time again: "Abra-abra-cadabra, I want to reach out and grab ya, Abra-abra-cadabra, Abracadabra" {Sorry, that's really bad, even for this site!} Nevertheless, Coach Greener assesses the admittedly young Rebels this way, "These kids are going to hit you hard and leave it all out on the field."

The Past........

  • Calendar iconOctober 29, 2015

Talk about getting back on track! After a couple of disappointing outings placed the Rebels back among the mere mortals of Massachusetts High School Football (ranked #19 by the Globe and #21 by the Herald), the 2015 team in the past two games has done what Rebel teams always do - dig deep, play with pride and respond in a big way. In wins over Natick and Dedham, the revamped Reb offense has outscored its opponents 83-7! Don't we wish we could borrow some of those points and apply them to the Milton and Wellesley games? But reality is what it is and the  2015 Walpole Rebels find themselves in high gear heading for the playoffs!
