Let There Be No Doubt! Rebels Beat RedHawks 17-14!

  • Calendar iconOctober 24, 2014

In this week's Walpole Times, Tyler Berkland is quoted as saying of the Natick game, "I expect a war. It's going to be a great game, it's going to come down to the final quarter probably." Now that the Rebels have defeated Natick 17-14 in the most exciting game we have seen in years .....OK, in one year, since last year's Natick game, we can alter the quote a little so it reads about Walpole's QB, "I am a warrior. I am going to have a great game, I am going to do whatever it takes to win in the final quarter, definitely..." Tyler would never say these things about himself, but we sure will. The outcome of the game was in question in the fourth quarter, and Tyler Berkland took over, the way championship quarterbacks take over, and with his legs and arm and brains and bravery, he put the Rebels in a position to win. And win they did. This was a game that lived up to its billing in every way, shape and form. The list of heroes is a long one, but let's start with these:

Wellesley To Raid Walpole Tonight!

  • Calendar iconOctober 2, 2014

The parents of today's Walpole Rebels will remember that we were younger, Thursday night was "destination television" or "Must See TV" with shows like Cheers, Taxi, Hill Street Blues, ER, Seinfeld, etc. Well, this Thursday in Walpole will be "destination Turco Field" and "Must See Rebel Football" as the Wellesley Raiders come to Walpole. Wellesley is 0-3 on the season, with their losses coming to Concord-Carlisle, 34-7; Newton North 28-23; and Natick 35-7 (see below). However, the Raiders play Walpole tough - all we have to do is remember last year's game against Wellesley was a thriller, with Walpole outlasting the Raiders in a shootout 49-35. It was the game where, in many ways, both Jack Lavanchy and Andrew Papirio began to define themselves as outstanding players. Both made huge plays throughout the Wellesley game last year. The high level of play of these two has certainly carried over to this year. As we said, Natick beat up Wellesley pretty bad last week, 35-7. Story HERE. So maybe Coach Jesse Davis' Raiders will be looking to redeem themselves against the unbeaten Rebels, tonight, at 7:00 p.m. at John Turco Memorial Field. Bring your umbrellas just case, but this is a "Must See" Game!

The Black Nights Shall Attacketh At Dusk!

  • Calendar iconOctober 29, 2015

The Walpole Rebels earned a first round playoff home game with its hard fought and well earned 5-2 record. But the team we drew as a first-round opponent will be anything but a walk in the park, as the 4-3  Stoughton Black Knights are set to invade the friendly confines of Turco Field on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.  Thanks to the new playoff system, Stoughton is another team we haven't seen much of in the past, and other than Town Spa Pizza and a pretty decent Army-Navy store in the center of town, we don't know that much about Stoughton at all! But seriously, the Black Knights will crusade in from the Hockomock League, so the Rebs better have their chinstraps buckled, because Stoughton is an "old-school"  (i.e., "smashmouth") Hockomock League football team. "Might be the best No. 4 vs. No. 5 seed matchup in any district in the state this year," according to Scott Barboza of ESPNBoston!

The Past........

  • Calendar iconOctober 29, 2015

Talk about getting back on track! After a couple of disappointing outings placed the Rebels back among the mere mortals of Massachusetts High School Football (ranked #19 by the Globe and #21 by the Herald), the 2015 team in the past two games has done what Rebel teams always do - dig deep, play with pride and respond in a big way. In wins over Natick and Dedham, the revamped Reb offense has outscored its opponents 83-7! Don't we wish we could borrow some of those points and apply them to the Milton and Wellesley games? But reality is what it is and the  2015 Walpole Rebels find themselves in high gear heading for the playoffs!

Football Game or Track Meet?

  • Calendar iconSeptember 24, 2015

Walpole travels to Milton this Friday night, for what promises to be a crazy, wide-open, and potentially high scoring affair. Milton has a new coach, who says this about his talented senior quarterback, Mike Fallon: "There's no doubt that Mike Fallon will set several, if not all single-season passing records here. That's what happens when you change to an offense that throws the ball 30-plus times per game." That's very unusual for a high school football program. The Wildcats have scored 60 points in their first two games, a 34-24 win over common foe Needham, and a 26-20 win over Quincy.

Magicians to Appear from Thin Air on Friday Night; Can They Pull a Rabbit Out of Their Hat?

Magicians to Appear from Thin Air on Friday Night; Can They Pull a Rabbit Out of Their Hat?

The Walpole Rebels open the 2015 campaign by hosting the Marblehead Magicians on Friday, September 11, 2015 at Turco Field. The rain will have passed, and the Rebels begin the 2015 season on a perfect September night for football.

Walpole has never played, nor even scrimmaged, Marblehead as far as we know. So who are these invaders from the North? Like Walpole, they won their league last year (in fact, they were NEC Champs 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2014), so this will be a clash of winning traditions, not to be missed!
